About the certificate program

The supervisor is arguably the most important person in a drilling operation and the knowledge, skills, experience and attitude of the supervisor directly impacts every aspect of the operation but particularly health and safety performance.
Supervisor training programs are normally focused only on supervisory skills and so this certificate has been developed specifically to deepen the supervisor’s technical and legal knowledge, skills and understanding so that he / she can more effectively manage the safety and productivity aspects of an operational drill site.

Who should register?

This certificate is aimed at practicing drill site supervisors, foremen and drillers who have been identified as potential supervisors. The certificate is also suitable for area or contract managers who wish to improve their level of knowledge and skill. This course is suitable for the roles mentioned in exploration drilling as well as for persons involved in blasthole and other drilling applications.

This certificate program is made up of twelve courses:

  2. Introduction to Drilling Methods

  3. Common Drilling Calculations

  4. The Use of Drilling Fluids in Exploration Drilling

  5. Fundamentals of Borehole Surveying

  6. Economic Aspects of Exploration Drilling

  7. Fundamentals of Hazard Identification

  8. Fundamentals of Risk Assessment

  9. Legal Aspects of Exploration Drilling (SA Law)

  10. Drilling Engineering

  11. Dual-tube Reverse Circulation Drilling Techniques OR Diamond Core Drilling Techniques (both can be selected for an additional cost)

  12. Practical Hazard Identification - Exploration

Before you register...

Consider these important points before you register:

  • This certificate program requires that candidates conduct hazard identification and risk assessments as well as apply the principles learned to an active drilling operation, therefore candidates must have experience on and access to an active drilling operation.

  • The Common Drilling Calculations and The Use of Drilling Fluids in Exploration Drilling courses require that the candidate has a good understanding of physical concepts and the ability to calculate areas and volumes of regular bodies.

Start dates

There are quarterly intake dates for this program. The intake dates for this year are:

  • 28 January

  • 4 April

  • 6 June

  • 5 September

You will receive a timetable upon registration and payment that details the submission dates for assessments and dates for virtual touch base sessions. Please note you will need to complete a course per month (including assessment), therefore this program will take approximately 12 - 13 months to complete.

Registration

The cost of this certificate program is R 19 600,00 per person, excluding VAT. This cost includes one elective.
